Liam’s Hillside Testimonial

Recently, I was recommended to join Hillside Clubhouse by my social prescriber.  If you are not sure about what this place is, Hillside is a mental health charity which supports people all across the London Borough of Islington. The charity organises different programmes of activities and support that rebuilds confidence, helps people to re-engage back into the community, as well as giving a sense of purpose.

When I first arrived at Hillside Clubhouse, I was not sure what to expect. I knew I needed support, direction and a sense of purpose. What I found here has been life-changing.

The staff and members welcomed me with open arms. I did not feel judged or out of place. Instead, I felt understood. Hillside gave me the structure I didnt know I needed, from daily tasks, shared responsibilities and teamwork. Whatever you find yourself doing; from helping in the kitchen, writing for the gazette or joining the employment support coaches, I started to find my strengths - things that I had forgotten.

Since being a part of Hillside, it has given me more than routine.  In fact it has given me my confidence back. I have learned new skills, made new friends and have felt pride of being a part of something bigger than myself that is positively beneficial. I have developed in ways I didn’t even know was possible.

Being at Hillside, I am not my diagnosis. I am not my struggles. I am simply just me.

Hillside Clubhouse has reminded me that recovery is not a lonely journey. It is a shared one. Every step I have taken here, big or small, I have been supported by people who have believed in me, even when I forgot to believe in myself.

I am grateful for every moment here. Because of Hillside, I have found not only support, but a future I can look forward to.

Hillside is a reminder to not keep things bottled up and that there is support out there.
